Many different kinds of flutes have been used throughout history all over the world. Generally, the flute is played by blowing a stream of at the edge of an opening in the flute. This forms "eddies" or vibrating air currents in the flute (much like blowing at the opening of a coke bottle does). The modern flute is a tube-like woodwind instrument with several "keys". The pitch is changed by opening or closing the various keys. The early versions of the modern orchestral flute have been around since at least the 2nd century B.C. in ancient Greece.
