From the planet Mercury; symbol Hg from hydrargyrum, or liquid silver; prehistoric. It appears in the glass tubin of thermometers and barometers; it also finds use in "silver" dental inlays and in silent electric switches. Vaporized mercury fills modern blue-hued street lights.
