Vitamins are the nutrients that keep the body processes regulated. They keep the nervous system healthy, keep the skin moist, heal cuts and bruises, coagulate the blood, stimulate the appetite, and help the body break down carbohydrate.

Vitamins are divided into 2 major categories, water-soluble and fat soluble.

Water-soluble means they dissolve in water. If they are not used then they are flushed out of the body system. They are not stored in the body, therefore, they need to be replenished daily. The water-soluble vitamins are vitamin C and all of the B vitamins including Thiamin, Riboflavin and Niacin.

Vitamin C

Vitamin C keeps the tissues of the body healthy. Vitamin C doesn't prevent colds, but it will help you weather them better.

Vitamin C is found in the citrus fruits, orange, lemon, grapefruit, lime, strawberries, cantaloupe, watermelon, and the vegetable sources are broccoli, tomatoes, and potatoes.

B Vitamins

The B vitamins’ major function is to keep the nervous system (brain, spinal cord, nerves) healthy.

B vitamins are found in milk, yogurt, cottage cheese, meats, soybeans, lima beans, bananas, whole grain cereals, and shellfish. Thiamin is found in nuts, fortified cereal products, and lean pork. Niacin is found in fish, meats, poultry, peanuts, and fortified cereal products. Thiamin and niacin stimulate the appetite and help the body to use carbohydrate for energy.

Ice CreamAll the rest of the vitamins are stored in fat and are known as fat-soluble vitamins. Each of them has at least one very special job. (ex. Vitamin A, Vitamin D, Vitamin K)

Vitamin A

Vitamin A helps keep the skin moist. It also keeps the eyes healthy. This makes good night vision possible.

Vitamin A is found in carrots, sweet potatoes, green leafy vegetables, milk, and cereal products.

Vitamin D

Vitamin D aids in building bone tissue. It also helps in absorbing calcium fro the digestive tract.

Vitamin D is found in dairy foods, including mild, cheese and yogurt, and in fish oils and egg yolks.

Vitamin K
Vitamin K and calcium work together to perform a life saving process of clotting the blood.

A good source for Vitamin K would be found in vegetables. Your body does make its own supply of Vitamin K in the intestine.
