Here are some tips for using cleaning products and preventing them from being pollutants.

  • To wash the dishes, use liquid or powdered soap. Stay away from any detergents. In dishwashers, use equal parts borax and washing soda.
  • To polish or clean brass, mix equal parts salt and flour with a little vinegar, then rub.
  • To polish copper, rub with lemon juice and salt or hot vinegar and salt.
  • Baking soda is great at cleaning things. To clean a bathroom or kitchen surfaces, mix four teaspoons of baking soda to a quart of water. To clean rugs, sprinkle dry baking soda on it and then vacuum.
  • Oil and lemon juice can be made into wood polishing substance. Use a mixture of two parts olive or vegetable oil to one part lemon juice. Toothpaste smeared on a damp cloth removes water spots on furniture.
  • Pour a half cup of borax (crystalline salt) into a gallon of water. This makes a good disinfectant.
  • To keep drains from clogging, use drain strainers to trap food and hair. To prevent fat build-up, pour boiling water down the drain once a week. If your drain is already clogged, pour ¼ cup of baking soda and 2 ounces of white vinegar down the drain and cover it. Wait a few minutes, then dump boiling water through the drain.
  • Washing cuts grease and removes stains.
