Wetlands are one of the more helpful tool used to clean water. A wetland is a source of water in which it is wet nearly the whole year. Only a special type of soil can be used to make a wetland along with certain types of plants. One of the more familiar wetland plant is cattails. Some other wetland plants would be reeds, water lilies, rushes, pickerel weed and willow and mangrove trees. Humans are now making artificial wetlands. You might find it hard to believe that man-kind can make wetlands at first, but it is relatively simple. All you have to do is survey the area to be served by wetlands and the spread gravel of various sizes on the bottom. Then you plant wetland plants. Cattails are extremely good for a young wetland(Click here to see some wetland pictures!). Another great source for cleaning water would be the waste-water treatment plant. These plants return hundreds of millions of gallons to nature, but, alas this isonly half of what we consume/use.

One thing everyone can do is reuse water. Gray water is what comes from showers, bathtubs, washing machines. You could water plants with gray water or, in some cities, they use the treated water to water parks, lawns, etc. In Clayton County, Georgia, the treated wastewater is sprayed over a forest, so much, in fact, you could nearly call it a tropical rain forest.

Avoiding hazardous wastes also help the water a whole bunch. This is becuase the wastes can contaminate underground water as well as surface water. See our page about hazardous waste for more information.
