WHY DID THIS HAPPEN?
You caused erosion to happen. In the first part, you created "wind". The "wind" moved the sand. This happened because the sand was not protected. In the second part, you created "rain." The "rain" moved the sand. The sand was not protected.
HOW COULD YOU PROTECT THE SAND?
Would a wall stop the wind from causing erosion? Try putting a cardboard wall around it. What would stop the water from causing erosion? Think about ways to end erosion. Try them on your pile of sand. Do you think that this would work in the real environment?
