The Sun was born 4.6 billion years ago. It gets energy from thermonuclear reactions in the core. The sun releases so much energy it could shine for 10 billion years.Astronomers believe after it uses up all of its energy it will shrink to the size of the Earth and become a white dwarf. It will release lots of gas and nova explosions when it changes to a white dwarf. On the sun's surface there are sun spots. They are created by magnetic energy that has come up through the sun's surface and lowered the temperature on the surface. At the core of the sun it is 27,000,000 F.The sun gives off many different kinds of radiation such as radio waves, x-rays, and ultra violet rays.

FUN FACT

When the sun loses its heat the Earth's atmosphere will be frozen onto the Earth's surface.

Stars are hugh balls of glowing gas in the sky. There are over 200 billion, billion stars in the universe. That's 200,000,000,000,000,000,000 stars. The sun is a star and the closest star to us. The next closest star is 25 million, million miles away. The largest star would take up the space between the sun and the earth and more. Stars that big, are 1,000 times larger than the sun's diameter. The small stars are smaller than the earth.

FUN FACT

The sun is not the largest star in the solar system.
