Lake Mead National Recreation Area was formed by the construction of hydroelectic dams on the Colorado River. Hoover Dam, the most famous of these, was completed in 1935. Lake Mohave was formed by Davis Dam. Both Lakes are on the Colorado River and in the states of Nevada and Arizona. The recreation area was established on October 8, 1964.
Lake Mead National Recreation Area has about 1 1/2 million acres of desert land and clear water, a perfect area for water-related activities! Lake Mead is located in southern Nevada and northwestern Arizona. Water activities at Lake Mead include swimming, boating, water skiing and fishing. Other activities include hiking, camping, horseback riding, and hunting(in season only). Tours of Hoover Dam are conducted daily.Swimming beaches are open year round.

The park is open year round, but during summer months daytime temperatures can reach above 110 degrees Farenheit.
Winter highs average a cool 50 degrees and nighttime lows seldom drop below 32 degrees Farenheit.

Fees:There is a $6 fee per night for developed campsites. Permits are required for fishing. An Arizona or Nevada fishing license, available at most marinas, are required.
Accessibility:
Main access is available from U.S. 93 from Las Vegas to Kingman,
Arizona. Buses from Las Vegas make regular trips to the recreation area
and Hoover Dam. Access is also available off Interstate 15 in Nevada.
Special Facilities:
Handicap Access is available at campsites, restrooms and visitor centers. There is a handicapped fishing pier at Lake Mead Marina only.
