Horizontal Motion Sample Problem Answers

1. If one sprinter runs the 400m in 58 seconds and another can run the same distance in 60 seconds, by how much distance will the faster person win by if they race?

13.314m

All that is required in this one is to find out how far the slower runner has traveled in 58 seconds, and then subtract that distance from 400m.

400m / 60s = 6.667m/s
6.667m/s * 58s = 386.686m
400m - 386.686m = 13.314m

2. A car is traveling south at 30m/s and two seconds later is going 25m/s in the same direction. What is the car's acceleration in this time interval?

2.5m/s2

All we need here is the acceleration formula.

a = (-25m/s - -30m/s) / 2s
a = 2.5m/s2
