Dormitories
Of all the Native Americans that worked on a mission, only a small
group actually lived inside the mission walls. These included the young,
unmarried women who worked in the kitchen. They lived in
dormitories, usually along the back of
the main building. This was to keep them away from the both the Spanish
soldiers as well as the young men of the villiage. Once a girl was
married, she joined her husband back with the rest of the village
outside the mission walls. Like the rest of the mission, the rooms of
the young women were simple and small.
