Each mission had (usually) two priests, and each priest had his own quarters. Their rooms were generally in the same hallway as the main entrance. This made it easier for them to oversee all of the activity in the mission. To help them in this task, some priests chose leaders from the native tribes called alcaldes. The alcaldes, along with the padres and soldiers were more than enough to keep most of the Native Americans obedient and hard working.
