Candle Making
A very important job at the mission was
making candles. Candles and the sun provided all the
light for people of the missions. Candles were made
from the fat scraped off the hides of cattle. This was
usually a job done by women. First, the fat was boiled
in large vats. Then, the women dipped wicks
in the fat. After being dipped several times, the
wicks would be covered in a thick layer of hardened
fat. This is what they used for light at night.
