The entrance to a mission was usually quite simple: no fancy trimmings, just a large solid gate that could be locked at night. In most cases, it was one of only two gates in the entire mission. This made the mission easier to protect and it made it much easier for the padres to keep track of exactly how many people entered and left their mission each day.
