...of a spanish padre
I awoke before the dawn, as is customary*
for me and my fellow padre. I offered up my morning prayer and got
dressed. At the sunrise, I rang the bell and watched my mission
come to life in the dawn. It is an amazing thing indeed to see the many types of
people God created to live together. At mass this morning, I could
see in the faces of some of the Indians that God has touched their
minds. I only pray that the others will follow in their footsteps
and find the truth for themselves. We finished our irrigation*
system today. Many of the children stared open-mouthed as they saw
the water rush by. I can see that many of the native people are
proud of what we accomplish here. I hope this season will be a
bountiful* one and will provide enough
food for our growing mission. There was a birth today, and the child
will be baptized tommorrow. We will call it José Carlos in
honor of San José (Saint John) and our beloved King Carlos.
The evening passed without event. I am weary, and must sleep now.
Farwell.
