SNOWSHOE HARE. These rabbit like creatures are 18-20 inches long and weigh 3-4 pounds. Their hind feet are 5 inches long, and
that's how they get the name snowshoe. In the summer their fur is brown turning
white in the winter. Between seasons the fur is a mottled brown and white. They have 2 or 3 litters each year with 3-4 young. The
first litter arrives in mid May. The second litter arrives in late June. The babies weigh 2 ounces. The lifespan is 2-4 years.
The hares eat grasses and the leaves and buds of plants during the summer. During the winter they
eat the bark of aspen and willow trees. Their predators are lynx, wolverines, foxes, martens, hawks, owls, and people.
Snowshoe hare are found through out most of Alaska in wooded swamps, spruce forests, and brushy areas.
