RIVER OTTERS. River otters are found over most of Alaska. They are usually found in or by rivers, streams, lakes and bays. They are 35-54 inches long including an 11-20 inch tail. They stand 9-10 inches at the shoulders, and weigh 11-33 pounds. Females are about 25 percent smaller than males. Their fur is a dark brown with a light brown on the under side. Pups weigh 1 pound at birth. They're usually 2 or 3 pups born to a litter. River Otters live 10-15 years. The food of the river otter include fish, snails, mussels, clams, crabs, and some plants. Their predators are wolves, coyotes, lynx, and humans.
