MOOSE. Bull moose (males) are 6 1/2 - 7 feet tall at the shoulders. They weigh between 1200 and 1600 pounds. Cows (females) weigh 800-1300 pounds. Calves are born in late May or early June. There are one or two calves born. The calves weigh 28-35 pounds at birth. By fall they will weigh 300-400 pounds. Their life- span ranges less than 16 years.

They eat willow leaves and grasses during the summer. Twigs and branches of willows, dwarf birches, aspens, cottonwoods, and alders during the winter. This feeding style is called browsing.

The predators of the moose are wolves, bears, and people. Moose calves are also preyed upon by wolverines.

Moose range in areas of willow and birch trees, alongside rivers and creeks, and on timberline plateaus throughout most of Alaska.
