CARIBOU are 6-7 feet long, 3 1/2-4 feet tall at the shoulders. Males weigh 300-400 pounds. Females weigh 175-225 pounds. Thier fur is a rich brown with a white underbelly. Males also have a silvery cape. Boh sexes grow antlers. Bulls' racks are impressive. They are up to 5 1/2 feet long and 3 feet wide with many spikes and forward-facing shovel(s), which is a portion of the antler extending downwqrd over the muzzle.

Calves are born in May and eigh about 12 pounds. Caribou live 8-12 years. Their predators are wolves, bears, and people. Calves are also preyed on by wolverines and eagles. Wolverines may also attack adult caribou when the caribou is old, hurt or struggling in deep snow.

They feed on grasses, sedges, leaves of willows and dwarf birch in the summer. In the winter they smell the lichen under the snow and eat that and dried sedges. Their range is on the tundra in the norhtern part of Alaska and on the Alaska Peninsula.
