Navigating Withthe Stars

The Navigator looks towards the back of the canoeto determine whether he is on the right path. Because the navigatordidn't have instruments, charts, or a written language, the ancientPolynesian navigator charted his course in his mind; he read stars,he listened to the winds, he watched birds and understood thelanguage of the sea. He steered his canoe by following known"Star Paths" trails of light formed by a succession of rising andsetting stars.
