How did Hawaiians know there was land up north?

Hawaiians knew there was land up north becausethey observed the birds that lived in their environment. The kind ofbirds that flew north were not sea birds. One kind of bird that flewnorth is the Kolea. It goes to the land up north to feed and then comes back.It doesn't live on the water.
