Would women, babies, plants and animals sailtoo?
In ancient Hawaii, women were brought along onthe voyage to help start families and communites when the voyagersgot to land. Because today's voyages focus on sharing knowledge, women learn and travel just like men.
Babies were not usually brought along on theancient voyages. Currently, they are still not broughtalong.
There were plants they brought along becausethey were assuming that plants were not on the land they weretravelling to. These plants were planted on the new land. Also, muchof the food that the voyagers survived on came from the kinds ofplants that they grew. A crew using the ancient form of voyaging willuse some of the plants that ancient voyagers used because thoseplants do not rot easily, and are a nutritious foodsource.
The voyagers brought along chickens, dogs andpigs. It is said that animals could smell land from far away. Somepeople think the animals were used for food but nobody on the canoeate the animals. Instead the ancient voyagers took the animals, likeplants, hoping to have the animals reproduce so that they too couldbe used as a source of food. The voyagers today do not usually bringanimals aboard.
