Middle Ages

Stained glass was first developed in the early 11th century in Europe. Some of the most beautiful stained glass windows were made in the years between 1130-1330A.D. The Sainte-Chapelle Cathedral is located in Paris, France and was built in 1243-1248A.D. It had 15 huge stained glass windows with 1,134 scenes that formed walls of glass. Stained glass is still made today by putting small pieces of glass of various sizes and colors on a full-scale drawing of a window. Then they are joined with lead strips and soldered (partially melted) into place. Once the panels are assembled, they are suspended in a window frame. They can be circular, rectangular, and many other shapes.
