This is our astronomy page. Our plans were to have a section about
current astronomical news, and a section with discussion about
it. But, due to technical difficulties, we were unable to fully
realize these plans as of yet. So, for now, you can fulfill your
astronomical cravings by reading this short article, or by looking
at some of the astronomy links here.
Right now, there is a big buzz about the supposed finding of life on Mars. Even though it is not "intelligent", this finding prompted me to hypothesize about the effects of encountering beings from another planet with an intelligence similar to ours.
Well, the question with the most influence on our relationship would be, of course, if we would coexist peacefully with them, or go into an all-out war--killing them, getting killed, and listening to the REM "It's the end of the world as we know it" theme music all the while. Despite all our human politics, and the number of psycho's running around the streets (and the Internet--hey, that could mean you ), I believe that we would somehow get it all together and start a peaceful relationship. As for the aliens, you never know what their agendas might be. But I think that, contrary to the Hollywood opinion, any being with enough intelligence to get into space would realize that there is no need to start an actual war, when there are so many computer simulations that let you conquer the universe from the comfort (and relative safety) of your own home.
All kidding aside, finding extraterrestrial life would be probably mean the single biggest change that has ever taken place in our society. Imagine what we could learn from them, and they from us. Maybe they would know how to cure the serious disease that plague our planet, such as cancer or AIDS, or help to utterly annihilate poverty. Then there is all the technological advances that would come. We would each learn from each other, and then, when we had exhausted both of our knowledge banks, we could join forces, and progress at a much higher rate. We would have at least twice the resources that we currently have access to. Who knows, if we teamed up with an intelligent species from another world, we might be able to start colonizing other worlds long before we would at our current rate. The benefits of such an alliance would be simply enormous.
So, if you happen to see anything that looks like an extraterrestrial walking down the street, try your best to make friends with it. The future of our world, and our existence in this vast universe, depends on it.
