DOLPHIN'S SONAR
Dolphins use their voices, and sharp ears to use as a sonar system. A sonar system is used over and under the water. A dolphins sonar is used to locate how close something is, and how it is shaped. Another name for sonar is echolocation. This is how dolphins use sonar waves. First, they send sound like a series of clicks. Then, sound waves bounce off the figure and comes back to the dolphin. It comes in an echo. The dolphin then figures out what it is and knows what its surrounding. A dolphin's sonar is more exact that man has ever created.
MATING
Dolphins always play when their
going to mate. They do this before having their young.
To mate, the male dolphin first circles the female and then goes
away. After that, the male comes back and slightly brushes the female. If he is not pushed
away, then he rubs himself against her. After that the male gets in an S shape and holds
himself like that for several seconds. That is a sign for feelings. In a few weeks
they will stay together. Soon they go near shallow water. They come belly to belly, and
pose for about thirty seconds. Dolphins mate in the spring after 11, to 12 months. The
calf is born. Calves can swim and breath after minutes of their birth. They are nursed up
to eighteen months.
BEHAVIOR
In one day, dolphins eat up to 1/3 of their normal weight. They usually eat fish and squid. Dolphins swim in groups weather they are killing something or to have fun. Dolphins have a blowhole their head in which they breath through. They don't need to come up for air for about two minutes. Dolphins can go more than 40 km and more than 25 mph. They can go more than 1,000 feet under water.
