In old Hawaiian times the land was divided into different parts leading from the mountians (Uka) to the ocean (Kai). The rules when you were in your Ahupua'a was that you couldn't take anything from another Ahupua'a or you would have to suffer real harsh consequences. In each Ahupua'a there was an alter to give offerings to like the god Lono. You would have to give your most best things that you had grown or hunted during the Makahiki. The Hawaiians got the word Ahupua'a from two different words, ahu which means, alter of stones and pua'a, pig.
