The Legend of Naupaka
Once there was a girl named Kilioe. People believed that she was a mo'o cheifess because she was the head of a hula school at Ke'e in Ha'ena. She killed two lovers, Nanau and Kapaka who broke the kapu (law). The kapu that they broke was being somewhere that they weren't suoposed to be and not being covered on the night before graduation. One was killed on a mountain and the other near the ocean. That is why some grow at the beach (naupaka-kahakai) and some at the mountain (naupaka-kuahiwi). They bore only half a flower because Nanau and Kapaka were separated. So now if you get one of each and put them together they form one flower because Naunau and Kapaka would be together again.
