Most hukilaus bring in enough fish for a whole village. |
A Hukilau is an old Hawaiian way of using a large net to catch a lot of fish. Huki means to pull and lau means leaf. The Hawaiians caught a lot of fish at a hukilau. The Ti leaves that hung down from the net made shadows that scared the fish into the middle of the net. The Hawaiians scared the fish away too. A lot of people gathered around to help pull in the net. The Hawaiians had a lot of fun working together at a hukilau. The Hawaiians shared the fish that they caught. Kupuna Kapu's favorite fish was akule. Where Kupuna Kapu grew up they used to have frequent hukilaus where everyone would go to the beach to help pull in the fishing nets. The owner of the net would separate the fish into bunches for each family, and they would often have plenty of akule (big eyed scad) so Kupuna's mother would fry it for them. Today it is still Kupuna's favorite fish. I never been to a hukilau but I think it would be kinda fun to scare the fish into the net. I wouldn't want to go to a hukilau because my friend says that people ask you to dance and sing the song "We're Going Hukilau". I also think that a hukilau would be kinda boring too. |
