D-Day
On June 6,1944, an order was given by General Dwight D. Eisenhower, which launched more than 150,000 men, thousands of ships, planes and landing craft from England to the shores of
Normandy, France. Operation Overlord, the invasion of occupied Germany, which was later known as D-Day had begun.
Before the day had ended the Allies controlled the beaches of Normandy. Thousands of men died or were wounded in combat. The Germans were so surprised by the attack that their forces were confused and scattered. Their armies were in retreat with the Allies pursuing.
Operation Overlord was the largest military operation that had ever been put into effect. It also was the beginning of the end of World War II and Adolf Hitler's reign of terror.
Below is the landing of the Allied on the Normandy beaches.
