The Kansas City Monarchs, owned by J.L. Wilkinson, were one of the best Negro League teams in all history. They were very consistent, capturing 10 pennants and two World Series. They had only one losing season during its entire stint!
The Monarchs were a member of the Negro National League from 1920 to 1931, winning pennants in 1923, '24, '25, and '29. They also played in the first two World Series ever, winning the first one. After dropping out from the league, they played independently until they joined the Negro American League in 1937, and remained there until the league folded in 1950.
They won 6 pennants during their stay with the Negro American League. During this time, they also won the 1942 World Series, beating the mighty Homestead Grays. In 1948, they won the second-half title, but lost to the Birmingham Black Barons in the very last Negro League World Series. They also won the first-half title in 1949 and the division title in 1950 before folding that same year.
