A miscellaneous category of sorts, the Traditional category is meant to encompass the musical forms which do not fall into the category of Classical music, but which had their beginnings sometime before the 20th century.
Although the focus is on traditional American music (as exemplified by the design for the Traditional icon on the main menu) you’ll find that in certain areas it dabbles out of those particular boundaries. Gospel, for example; though it reached its full glory in the United States, it has clear and definite roots in the songs of the old Christian religion. In particular, the rather vast genre of “folk music”spans outside of America and into the world beyond.
