What do you think of when you think of zoos? You probably think of animals in
cages for display. Even though they are mostly there for display, scientists
study the animals behavior patterns and diseases that the different species of
animals can develop. Most large cities have a zoo or too, but even small
towns can have one too. Large zoos can have a huge variety of different animal
species. Mammals, birds, reptiles, insects, and amphibians are on display at
most good sized zoos. The two largest zoos in the world are operated by
the Zoological Society of San Diego. The San Diego Zoo is one of the two zoos
the Zoological Society of San Diego runs, and the other is the San Diego Wild
Animal Park. Zoos don't have to be large and elaborate to be admired.
The Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum is one example. Located in the hot, dry
climate of Tucson, Arizona, this small zoo mainly exhibits native wildlife
species from the desert around the zoo, but the way it's exhibited has been
copied by zoos all around the world.
