FACTS:
Asthma is a respiratory disorder that can affect children and adults. It is best described as blockage of the airways. Asthma happens when a temporary narrowing of the bronchi causes breathing disorders. Most of the time, attacks are brought on by an alle rgic reaction to antigens such as grass, tree pollens, molds, and certain foods. They may even be triggered by chemicals in the air, or by an infection in the respiratory tract.

There is a wide range of severity and length in asthma attacks. They can be very severe or very mild, and can last from a few minutes to several days. Asthma attacks can start at any age, but usually begin in childhood. It is a long-term chronic disease. But attacks also usually become less frequent and less severe over the years, and in about half the affected children, the disease disappears before reaching adulthood. Studies have shown about 1 out of every five children develop asthma, and one out of every 15 adults develop the disorder.
Usually, attacks begin minutes after exposure to a triggering agent. The symptoms are tightness in the chest, coughing and wheezing, and difficulty breathing. Asthma tends to run in families, so children who have parents with the disease are more likely to get it. Unfortunately there is no cure for asthma. but on a long term basis, attacks can be controlled by figuring out what triggers them so that you can avoid it. Relaxing and breathing exercises have been found to be helpful. Also they can be control led medicines inhaled or given orally, such as an inhaler or steroids.
