Our Interview With Mel Gilroy, A Lieutenant In The Oakland University Police Department

Q. Do you consider your job to be adventurous or not?

A. Yes, but not all the time.

Q. In the years you have worked what changes has your job went through?

A. The hunt for criminals and technology has greatly increased.

Q. How does your family feel about your position in the police force?

A. While they worry about me, they are proud of the work I do. I think my kids like the fact that their dad's a cop. On occasion when a case we're working on is in the papers, they get a certain amount of attention at school. My wife (married 23 years) knew what she was getting into , but is glad I am off of shift work.

Q. Do you look forward to getting up and going to work?

A. Yes, but not all the time.

Q. What is the most rewarding part of your job?

A. Putting really dangerous types in jail.

Q. How do you handle stress generated from your job?

A. By doing other things like fishing and golf.

Q. How do others depend on you?

A. The citizens depend on us to handle the needs for safety and services.

Q. What scares you the most about upcoming changes in the next few years?

A. Not much.
