Oxygen Cylinder

Purpose:

  1. To determine the effects of mixing manganese dioxide and hydrogen peroxide.

Materials:

  1. Large graduated cylinder
  2. Powdered manganese dioxide
  3. Hydrogen peroxide (3% or 30%--30% will give better results)

Procedure:

  1. Place some powdered manganese dioxide at the bottom of the graduated cylinder.
  2. Pour in some hydrogen peroxide.
  3. A gas will evolve, which is oxygen. Place a glowing wooden splint in the gas the verify that it is oxygen.
Questions:

  1. What happens to the hydrogen peroxide?

  2. What is the reaction that occurs?
