The SR-71 began its development as the A-12. The A-12 was designed by Lockheed Skunk Works. It served as a one man reconnaissance aircraft. The SR-71 was designed very similar to the A-12 the only major difference was the addition of another seat and a change in equipment. The other crew member served as weapons officer and was in charge of locating and firing at enemies.
