"Peace Process 2001" is a computer project designed to help students reflect on the past as we move into the future with the advent of a new millennium which begins January 1, 2001 (Gregorian Calendar). We want to create an evolving library which pays tribute to movers, shakers, and peacemakers: Past, Present, and Future. Our web site will serve as "an electronic triptych" which will catalogue events, interviews, essays, artistic interpretations within the movement of time.
Remember the Past
We have created an outline of the major developments within the technology of communication. Progressive awareness of numerical ordering has brought us to this moment of digital fiber optics and worldwide communication with computers. The symbol of a spiral captures the accelerating movement of advanced technology. Who were the individuals that served as pioneers and inventors within each stage of development? Who were the people that improved human communications by their social actions? Because the year 2001 is the 100th anniversary of the Nobel Prize, its history serves as an interesting chronicle of 100 years of human achievement. Our project recognizes the legacy of Alfred Nobel and the many women and men who became Nobel Prize Laureates because of their visonary work in various fields.
Participate in the Present
Which people and organizations are making a difference in creating a more peaceful world? Our project wants to recognize the major accomplishments in society today. With more people on-line, it is easier and easier to have direct communication all over the world. We want to establish computer links to as many groups as possible!
Honor the Future
The future segment of our electronic triptych is a world map which will identify other communities in this country and around the world who want to build a "Peace Process 2001" web site. We will celebrate a common theme, but identify our unique differences and cultural backgrounds with our own authentic interpretation. Because "Peace Process 2001" is not a prescriptive solution to the diverse issues and problems of the world. Our goal is to ask honest questions which will prompt us to reflect on our individual peace process. In this way, we can have hope for the future.
Creating a "Computer Quilt" that Promotes Sane Values
Share this idea with someone you know. Send us your URL or e-mail address and your poems, art, stories, photographs, and ideas. Our world map directory will link us all together in a global community. We want to see our world links grow in the five years leading to the new millennium. We invite teachers, students, and communities to "rise to the occasion" to develop their own web sites celebrating peace.Today's youth will "come-of-age" during a time when they are learning to use the most powerful tool of communication in human history. Our purpose is to develop a "computer quilt" combining linked home pages which honor and encourage youth. Conflict and violence represent destructive and outdated ways of living for a culture that must learn to cooperate. A new millennium represents an opportunity to emphasize new and positive values. Let us rise to the occasion!
