It Could Happen

by Bryan Newman

The future. That's a tough one. The future could be anything. Some people are afraid of the future. Afraid of what might happen to them. I would rather think of the future as a discovery. It was best described in a favorite movie of mine (Star Trek VI) as the future being the undiscoverd, just waiting to uncover itself. Nobody can really predict the future. We lie to ourselves and make weather forecasts that are constantly just plain wrong, yet we're still excited when the people on the TV tell us that we're gonna have sunshine. I tend to think of the future as being worse than it is right now. Less rainforest, more pollution; less wealth, more disease. Maybe it could be different. It would be cool if it was different. More peace, less hunger, more knowledge, less poverty. That's what I want to happen. That's what we all want to happen. The world to just wake up one day and find out what is wrong with this picture. This could happen. I wouldn't count on it, but it could happen.
