Philosophy

Dewey thought of philosophy as a tool for determining the proper course of action. One of the most notable American thinkers of the 20th century, he used philosophy to resolve current social issues and reform the education system. From of his beliefs was perfected the theory of progressive education. John Dewey, William James, and Charles Sanders Pierce founded the movement called pragmatism.

Biography

Dewey was born in Burlington, Vermont, on Oct. 20, 1859. He attended the University of Vermont and Johns Hopkins University. He taught philosophy and psychology at the University of Michigan. From 1894 to 1904 he served as the head of the department of philosophy, psychology, and education at the University of Chicago. In 1904 Dewey transferred to Columbia University in New York City.
