Hood was born in Owingsville Kentucky on June 29th, 1831.
Despite the lose of an arm at Gettysburg, and a leg at Chikamauga, Hood returned to the field in 1864. In July of 1864, he replaced Johnston in the field, but suffered a string of defeats in Atlanta and Tennessee. Physically crippled and temperamentally unsuited to army command, he was relieved from command at his own request in January 1865. After the Civil War, he became a merchant and eventually an Insurance Officer.
