January 1862 - As the first step of the Union's offensive, Union troops under General Ulysses S. Grant storm through Kentucky, defeating the Confederates in the battles at: Mill Springs , Fort Henry , and Fort Donelson.
February 27, 1862 - Congress passes the Confederate Act and, the following year, the Habeas Corpus Act, which give Lincoln extra powers limiting citizens rights.
March 8-9, 1862 - The famous battle between ironclads, the Monitor and Merrimack, occurs at Hampton Roads, Virginia.
March - Coloradans turn back the South's westernmost incursion at Glorieta pass, New Mexico.
April 6, 1862 - Union troops are nearly driven into a river by an ambush near Shiloh Church, Tennessee.
The next day, Confederate troops at Island Number 10 surrender to the Union naval force coming up the Mississippi. Flag Officer Farragut continues his trek up the Mississippi river and takes New Orleans by the end of April.
April 16, 1862 - Slavery is abolished in the District of Columbia.
June 1862 - Taking command, Lee breaks McClellan's seige of Richmond in the Seven Days' Battle.
July 1862 - U.S. Internal Revenue taxes everything from gunpowder to umbrellas to earn more money for the war.
August 29, 1862 - The Second Battle of Bull Run is won by the Confederates.
September 1862 - Federal Troops repress a Sioux uprising led by Little Crow in Minnesota.
September 17, 1862 - The bloodiest one day battle, The Battle of Antietam, begins and ends with no clear victor.
September 23, 1862 - Lincoln issues a preliminary Emancipation Proclamation. This proclamation states that all slaves in Confederate states will be free as of January 1, 1863.
December 13, 1862 - General Ambrose Burnside leads the army of the Potomac to disaster at Fredericksburg, Va.
