Secession of States
Near the beginning of the war eleven states seceded and formed the Confederate States of America:
- Alabama
- Arkansas
- Florida
- Georgia
- Louisiana
- Mississippi
- North Carolina
- South Carolina
- Tennessee
- Texas
- Virginia
These states, spurred by the election of Lincoln, who won with only 40% of the vote, and the threat to slavery and states rights, seceded from the union, and established the Confederate States of America, lead by a shocked Jefferson Davis, who was notified of his election while in his garden. Their secession marked the disolving of the Union, and the beginning of the Civil War. Soon after the secession, disputes over federal or state property began, and the first skirmishes and battles of the war began. The first resounding and permanent shots of the war were fired at Fort Sumter, where a regretful General Beauregard was forced to fire on his West Point instructor, and start the bloodiest of all American wars...
