Nature Simulations
Mother nature still reigns supreme as the unquestioned ruler
of our world. Earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, severe weather, and
other natural disasters happen sporadically, but with enough
regularity to keep humans on their toes. Now with Alife as a tool,
mankind will be better equipped in the future to foresee and thus
effectively prepare for tragedy when it strikes. For example,
computer simulations (like those included on this home page) that can
visually render the effects of, say, a forest fire, avalanche, or oil
spill help emergency services in those areas be more prepared for the
conditions that may arise from such an event. By knowing in advance
which areas of a forest will burn the fastest, which currents will
carry oil the closest to fisheries and harbors, or even which areas
may succumb first to flash floods, humans can get the jump on nature
before she strikes.
Nature simulation also has a lighter side. It is said that
mimicry is the highest form of flattery. By attempting to copy the
nuances of nature, mankind will gain an unprecedented comprehension of
the infinite and wonderful complexities that govern the world around
us. Hopefully, with understanding will come respect and further
advances in ALife will lead to a greater reverence for the world in
which we live.
