Yokozuna Musashimaru, the second
foreign-born Yokozuna, was born in Samoa and then moved to Hawaii
when he was 10. He was scouted by Date Jiichiro, a gold medalist
in wrestling at the Montreal olympics. He introduced him to Musashigawa
Oyakata, but, he was reluctant to take a foreigner. Life in Sumo
is tough for all people, but, the language barrier makes it even
tougher for Non-Japanese people. The risk paid off, and Musashimaru
has only had 1 losing record since his entry into Sumo in 1989.
He was promoted to the rank of Yokozuna after being a Ozeki for
5 long years. He has been a solid Ozeki, and we hope that his career
as a Yokozuna will be just as stunning.
