Blue Whales

Speed:

  • Cruises 8-10 knots
  • Surges up to 20 knots for ten minutes

  • Bluish gray with grayish patches on back and sides

  • Up to 105 feet
  • It is the largest animal that has ever lived

  • Up to 200 tons (larger than 30 elephants)

  • Spout is high and columnar

    Eating Habits:

  • They feed on krill
  • It can hold over one ton of food in its stomach
  • It needs 3,000,000 calories a day

    Interesting Features:

  • The Blue whales are a totally protected species
  • Tongue may weigh 22 tons
  • Heart may weigh 1,500 lbs.
  • "Hitch-hikers" found attached to the body of the Blue whale -Barnacles -Fleas and Round worms live in the baleen plates -Remora or Suckerfish -Pacific Lamprey
