The Battle of Stones River
DECEMBER 31, 1862- JANUARY 3, 1863
By: Chanelle Peters
The North is somewhat confused, by the "Battle of Stones River". We won, but lost
many men! I guess, sometimes you win the hard way! General Rosecrans was leading
our troops, and decided to pin the Confederates agaisnt the river. Alas, they were attacked first from the left . By midday, our left wing was pinned! The afternoon came
and the Confederates began to tire. January 1, the troops rested . General Rosecrans
decided to catch the Confederates off guard, the next day.
The next morning, Rosecrans attacked! This battle continued into the following day.
Finally, the Confederates surrendered! Our casualties were 12,906. A Federal victory
that confuses many, but brings happiness to others. The "Battle of Stones River" will be
remembered!
