The Battle of Missionary Ridge
Nicole Prezioso
This is a day to mourn, my Southerners. Our hero, General Braxton Bragg, had been defeated.
the battle lasted from November 23 to 25, 1863. It involved General Sherman and Hooker with the Army of the Cumberland, against our own General Bragg and Army of Tennessee.
Grant had thought that Bragg would strengthen the northern end of Missionary Ridge further. They needed to capture Missionary Ridge so that they could fight their way out of Chattanooga. Therefore, Grant sent Thomas to attack three of our trench lines, and they did so with great determination despite heavy fire. This shocked the Federal generals because they thought that his army had been ruined in Chickamauga.
By 4:30 P.M., the Army of Tennessee had escaped in fear (how embarrassing!) Neither side had a devastating number of casualties, but they were significant. The Yankees lost 5,824 men, whereas we lost 6,667. Braxton, we still have faith in you, you will prevail.
