As scientists have found out the oldest traces of life on earth are about 3,5 billion years old. These so called stromatolithes (stratified rock) consist of fossilised one cell creatures. Some scientists even think that it is possible that extraterrestrial life is possible under the same conditions as it is on the earth. The question that can't be answered, however, is whether such life would be similar to the one in existence on the earth or not. The starting point of the experiments, with which scientists search for life on other planets is, however, based on biochemical processes, and more specifically carbon.
