Brain Death is the state inwhich the function of the entire brain, including the brain stem which controls respiration and blood pressure, is irreversibly last. The heart can be sustained temporarily with the support of a mechanical respirator, but will eventually stop (in most cases, a few days). Less than 1% of all deaths become brain death.

The vegetable is the state that one lose consciousness because of complete or part loss of the function of the cerebrum. But the centeral area of the brain which controls the function of breathing movement works, so one can breath for oneself, if the remedy from then works well for pacient, one could recover. In the sense, this state is fundamentally different from brain death.
