At present time in Chile, there are some (a few) indigenous groups. One of these groups is the "Mapuche People". Most of time these groups of people do not attend to the tradicional health centers to cure their illnesses but, because of their culture, believes or another reasons, they apply for an alternative medicine, which has been used and transmitted from one to another along they historic tradition.
Within this alternative medicine the main function is played by "The Machi", which is the person who has a "heaven talent" given by the "wenechen god". She/he is encharged  of healing  persons from illnesses and aches, drinking tea prepared  from medicinal plants. When the illnesses  require of a bigger care, the Machi celebrates a "Machitún" (a mapuche  ritual to take out the disease  from the body of the sick person).


En Chile, en la actualidad existen aún algunos <muy pocos>  grupos indígenas, y uno de ellos corresponde al "Pueblo Mapuche"; estos muchas veces no recurren a los centros asistenciales tradicionales de salud, sino que por su cultural, creencias ancestrales u otros motivos recurren a una medicina alternativa, que ha sido transmitida y utilizada a través de su tradición histórica.
En esta medicina alternativa el rol fundamental lo cumple "La Machi" (él o ella), que es la persona que por "don divino", otorgado por "El Dios Wenechen", se encarga de la sanidad de enfermedades y dolencias de las personas a través de la ingestión del té de plantas consideradas medicinales, o si la enfermedad es de mayor cuidado recurre a la celebración de un "Machitun" <ritual Mapuche, destinado a sacar el mal desde el cuerpo del enfermo>.
