For the most part, films prior to the 1930’s were silent, meaning they lacked synchronous sound. It was rare, however, to sit in a silent theater. Almost always, the movie was accompanied by a piano or organ, and as movies became more complex and theaters grew, entire orchestras would often be assembled to perform music, often specifically composed for the film. |
